Dragon Ball Z’s Yamcha Spinoff Manga Will Run For 3 Chapters

Manga artist Dragon Garow Lee revealed on his Twitter account on Monday that his Gaiden: Tensei Shitara Yamcha Datta Ken (Dragon Ball Side Story: The Case of Being Reincarnated as Yamcha manga will run for three chapters. The second chapter is slated for release next month. Check out the Twitter status pic.

The series is a spinoff of Akira Toriyama‘s Dragon Ball manga, and the first chapter debuted on Shueisha‘s Shonen Jump + web manga site on Monday. Lee is drawing the manga, and Toriyama is being completely credited for the original work. The most interesting thing about this development is that we’ll finally see Yamcha get his victory as a truly successful hero. In the original Dragon Ball Z Saiyan’s arc, Yamcha was killed in the first round by the Saibamen. In all honesty he did get a pretty raw deal in the first run, especially since subsequently thereafter, Vegeta married Bulma and had a child with her. How’s that for irony? Anyway, moving along.

In the manga Spinoff, a high school boy gets into an accident by falling down a stair, and reincarnates in the Dragon Ball world as Yamcha. Armed only with his knowledge of the later events in the comic, he sets out to make Yamcha the hero of the story.

The manga’s title is a parody of Fuse’s Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (The Case of Being Reincarnated as a Slime) novel series, where a man is murdered and wakes up in a fantasy world as a slime monster. You can find the first chapter online with translations, or you can just wait until all three chapters are done to read them over.
